Mpox

Mpox

Due to the current outbreak of Mpox in Central and Western Africa we are getting numerous enquiries about the Mpox vaccine. This is not currently available privately in the UK. A very small subset of people may be eligible on the NHS. This information can be found on the link below including symptoms and what to do if you think you may have Mpox.
Even if travelling to these regions the risk of Mpox is very low. There is no recommendation for the use of the vaccine in travellers from the UK at present.
Mpox is transmitted via close contact with someone with Mpox. Therefore travellers can minimise their risk by continuing good hygiene measures such as regular hand washing, ensuring surfaces/objects are clean/disinfected and also from ensuring bedding and towels are clean. Animals can also transmit Mpox so avoiding contact with animals whilst abroad and ensuring any food containing meat is well cooked also reduces risk of transmission.
We will update our website if the vaccine becomes available. However we have confirmed that it is only supplied to governments and not commercially. This means it will likely only be available if the UK government decide there is a need to vaccinate further groups in the population.
If the risk to travellers increases, including if it becomes inadvisable to travel, would be published on the FCDO website.
